Google Sites to Android app: put your site on students' phones

Teachers, clubs and small teams use Google Sites because it's free and simple. Turning one into an Android app takes ten minutes — if the site is public.

Short answer

Publish the Google Site so that anyone can view it, copy the published URL (sites.google.com/view/your-site), and build it with a URL to APK maker. If the site is restricted to your school or company domain, the app will hit a Google sign-in page that Google blocks inside apps — make it public first.

The one setting that decides everything

In Google Sites click Publish → Manage and look at Who can view my published site. In a Google Workspace account (school or business), the default is often only people in your organisation. That forces a Google login — and Google deliberately blocks its sign-in screen in embedded app browsers, so visitors would be stuck. Change it to Anyone for the app to work.

If your content must stay private, keep the site restricted and share the site link instead of an app — or build an offline HTML app from content you are allowed to distribute.

Build it

  1. Publish and copy the URLUse the published address, not the editor link (/u/0/d/…/edit).
  2. Open Website to APKPaste the URL, set the app name — e.g. Year 9 Science — and an icon.
  3. Build and installDownload the signed APK and install it on a test phone.
  4. Share itSend the APK file or a QR code to students, or publish the AAB to Google Play / Managed Google Play for a school.

Tips for a school app

  • Use a short name (12 characters or fewer) so it isn't cut off under the icon.
  • Put the timetable, homework and contact pages in the top navigation — that's the app's main menu.
  • For many devices, schools can push the app with Managed Google Play instead of sideloading.

Questions people ask

Why does my Google Sites app ask me to sign in?

The site is shared only with your organisation. Set Who can view my published site to Anyone.

Can students install it without Google Play?

Yes, by opening the APK file and allowing installs from that source. See how to install an APK.

Does a Google Sites app update by itself?

Yes. Edits you publish in Google Sites appear the next time the app opens.
